Subaru has announced the 2016 Subaru WRX has received the 2015 Top Safety Pick award and, when equipped with the optional Eyesight Driver Assist Technology, the 2015 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The 2016 WRX achieved the highest possible rating of ‘Good’ in the Institute’s crashworthiness evaluations of front small overlap, front moderate overlap, side impact, roof crush and rear impact.  The vehicle also received a ‘Superior’ rating in the Institute’s front crash avoidance testing.  The rally-bred WRX is powered by a 268 hp 2.0-litre turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine.

New features available on the 2016 WRX include Blind Spot Detection/ Rear Cross Traffic Alert System with Lane Change Assist, as well as Eyesight with Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Lane Departure Warning.  To win 2015 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must have “Good” ratings in all four tests of high-speed front and side crash tests, a rollover test, and evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts.  In addition, “Good” or “Acceptable” performance in a small overlap front test introduced in 2012 is also required. The same level of performance in those tests, along with an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating for front crash prevention, is required for the higher accolade, 2015 Top Safety Pick.

The best new SUV? The 2014 Subaru Forester

The new 2014 Subaru Forester is the highest rated compact SUV on the market today, and with good reason. The newly designed Forester has advantages over all other competitors in many different aspects of itself.

The new 2014 Subaru Forester has a four-cylinder engine that offers 170 hp, with upgrades to a turbo-charged engine available that comes with a whopping 250 hp at 5,600 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque between 2,000 rpm and 4,800 rpm when consuming premium unleaded. The base model four-cylinder engine, with continuously variable transmission (CVT) achieves 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, which is at the top of the compact SUV class. This is an improvement on the 2013 Subaru Forester, which achieved 21/27 mpg with a four-cylinder engine. 

The 2014 Subaru Forester has continued it’s legacy as an extremely safe compact SUV and even going a step further, earning the 2013 Top Safety Pick. New this year is a driver knee airbag that deploys to prevent knee injuries during collisions and anti-whiplash seats. Other improvements in safety include Subaru’s new EyeSight driver assist technology, which includes Adaptive Cruise Control system, a Pre-Collision Braking system and a Vehicle Lane Departure Warning system. This is offered in select models.
