History is being made in Denton Texas

Denton was named in honor of John B. Denton, a preacher and lawyer, who was killed in a 1841 battle led by General Edward H. Tarrant against the Keechi Indians.  The city was incorporated in 1866 and with the creation of the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881 brought an influx of people to the area.

Many of the buildings were originally constructed in the 1920’s including Huffines Motor Company.

On May 5, 1924 Huffines Motor Company opened for business in downtown Denton. J.L. Huffines, Sr. founded the company on two principles which are still the benchmark for all decisions made at the dealerships – treat the customer the way they want to be treated and support the community.

Mr. Huffines always believed that when he sold someone a vehicle he had made a friend. Passed from father to son, to grandson, Mr. Huffines' philosophy has formed the solid foundation on which every Huffines dealerships are grounded, small town friendliness and a strong commitment to please each and every customer which would serve the dealership group well over the last 85 years.

In 1968 Denton, Texas had yet to experience the rapid growth that is seen today.  Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport wouldn’t open for another 6 years, “Mean Joe Greene” was preparing for NFL stardom with the Pittsburgh Steelers finishing up an illustrious career playing for North Texas State University, and Texas Woman’s University had yet to accept men to any of its collegiate programs.

During the same time Subaru of America was founded as the US sales and marketing subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) of Japan.  Subaru is known for its use of the unique boxer engine design on all models with a symmetrical all-wheel drive capability for most models.

By 1989 Denton, Texas had more than doubled in size, and the former county courthouse was still looking plush from restorations made three years earlier for the Texas Sesquicentennial.  North Texas State University was called University of North Texas; Denton had only one high school in town, and the “Redbud Capital of Texas had recently been named No. 58 out of the “Top 100 Best Places to Live in America.”  In the same year Huffines Subaru was added to the Huffines Chevrolet Lewisville location calling the nearby city home for 20 years.

When 2009 rolled around, Denton boasted four high schools, two high school football State Championships by Ryan High School (Guyer didn’t win their championship game until 2012), and Huffines Subaru moved to the city that Jim Lehrer (TV Journalist), Phyllis George (Miss America 1971), Pat Boone (Singer/Actor) Roy Orbison (Singer), Don Henley (Rock Musician) and Dr. Phil (Author of 5 #1 best sellers/star syndicated TV show) have called home.  Huffines Subaru joined their sister dealership, Huffines KIA, at 5150 I-35E South in Denton, Texas.

Under the tutelage of General Manager, Robert Goodwin; the North Texas dealership has a highly knowledgeable, all-Subaru Certified staff.  The staff consistently provides customers in the Dallas and Ft. Worth area a friendly and familiar face to help with every automotive need.

Huffines Subaru is the oldest Subaru dealership in the State of Texas and continues to achieve new records every month.  Huffines Subaru Denton as experienced 143% growth over last year during the month of July and for the past 7 months has maintained 90% growth.  Because of the outstanding customer service; Huffines Subaru has been named the Texas Subaru Dealer of the Year in 2012 and 2013 by Dealer Rater.

Subaru is both practical and fun to drive.  The automaker crafts vehicles whose all-wheel-drive powertrains and available turbochargers facilitate sharp performance.  Incongruously, most Subaru vehicles are discreet and versatile enough to serve as competent family haulers, and the brand is known for boasting some of the best crash test scores in the automotive world.

Huffines Subaru Denton has 8 Models to choose from; The Outback, Legacy, Forester, Impreza, Impreza WRX, Tribeca, BRZ and the XV Crosstrek.

Huffines Subaru Denton is located at 5150 South I-35 E in Denton, Texas.  More information can be found by visiting www.huffinessubaru.com or by calling 940.321.2504.  “We are proud to share and be part of Denton’s great history and welcome everyone to come see what it is like to be treated how you want to be treated” says, Robert Goodwin, General Manager of Huffines Subaru Denton.

Great Things to do in Denton

Huffines Subaru Denton is proud to be a member of the Denton community.  The city of Denton is home to many activities, a historic square, and two Universities.  If you’re looking for something fun to do, here are just a few highlights Denton has to offer.

Denton Square
The square in downtown Denton is the cultural and political hub of the city.  The historic courthouse in the center is home to a museum showcasing the history of Denton.

Along the streets are many shops and restaurants to visit.  A few of my favorites are the Downtown Mini Mall, which is filled with some of the oddest collectibles and antiques you’ll find anywhere.  You can certainly fill an afternoon going through the buildings two floors full of items you’re not likely to find anywhere else.

Also the square is home to Atomic Candy Store, a vintage record store called Mad World Records, and More Fun Comics and Games, a store I frequent on a weekly basis.  While on the square be sure to try some delicious homemade ice cream at Beth Marie’s Ice Cream Parlor or grab a cup of joe at Jupiter House Coffee.

The Square also features many events such as music and art festivals, which are almost always happening.  You can check out what is coming up next at www.dentonlive.com

The Campus Theatre

The Campus Theatre was a grand movie house built in 1949 in Downton Denton as a movie theatre that would cater to kids attending TWU and UNT.  In 1990 the Denton Community Theatre chose The Campus Theatre as the permanent home for their theatrical productions and it was re-opened in 1995.

This is a great place to do something different and go see a live play or musical and is perfect for a date night or a night out for the whole family.

Old Alton Bridge

For fans of the Supernatural, there is no shortage of spooky stories surrounding Denton landmarks.  From the ghosts of Bruce Hall at UNT to a plethora of spirits that supposedly haunt the square.  However none are more notorious, or creepier, than the story of “Goatman’s Bridge” aka Old Alton Bridge.  The origin of the Goatman isn’t exactly known as there are multiple background stories to why Old Alton Bridge is haunted.  From everything to occults to Quakers, locals tell the story of a half man, half beast who is the source of mysterious apparitions and unexplained disappearance for generations.  They say if you cross the bridge at night and rap on the steel trusses 3 times, or anyone who turns off their vehicle lights and honks 3 times, will be visited by the Goatman.  If you don’t scare easy, you might want to brave the bridge.

Denton Movie Tavern

If you enjoy seeing movies you may enjoy the Denton Movie Tavern.

It’s a different experience than the typical movie theatre, trading in the traditional rows of seating for box seats that come with a table.

You can enjoy that summer blockbuster and eat out at the same time.  Waiters come by to take your food and drink orders and there’s a full service bar.  They still have popcorn for traditionalists, but you also have the option of upgrading to things like chips and queso, hamburgers, pizza, and other items you would normally find in a restaurant.

This is just a small selection of my favorite things to do in Denton.  What do you like to do?  Be sure to comment and tell us your favorite local place or activity.  Of course when you’re out enjoying everything Denton has to offer, you’ll want to do so in style.  Which brings me to Denton’s Premier car dealership, Huffines Subaru Denton!  Visit us for the best deal on a new or used vehicle to cruise our fine city in style, stop by our showroom at 5150 S Interstate 35E or give us a call at 940-321-2504 today!
